<image:title>Home - Shade Tree Pruning</image:title>
<image:caption>In an urban or suburban setting, periodic pruning is essential in managing the interaction of trees and the landscape. The way a tree is pruned will have a lasting impact on its growth and development over the course of it’s long life. We may be removing dead or dying limbs, reducing reach or weight towards a structure, improving airflow or light, or simply keeping the tree healthy and vigorous. When you work with us you can be confident you are hiring experienced professionals who are following industry best practices for the health of the trees and your safety.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Tree Removal</image:title>
<image:caption>We love trees, but sometimes they need to go! Although we will never push you to remove a tree unnecessarily, at times the best option is to take out a compromised tree which poses a hazard to your family, buildings, or other infrastructure. Or you may choose to remove a tree simply to gain more light, space, or a view. We employ a range of techniques, from precision felling, climbing, technical rigging, and use of our 72’ aerial lift to carefully and safely take down trees of all sizes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Ornamental and Fruit Tree Pruning</image:title>
<image:caption>Proper pruning will keep your smaller trees and shrubs in good health for a long and happy life. Our typical pruning objectives are to increase vigor, stimulate growth or fruit production, improve structure for the long term, improve aiflow, aesthetics, or just to keep the height and spread in check. Shrubs, ornamentals, and fruit trees can be pruned year round, but the favored time of year is winter, when they are dormant.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Cabling</image:title>
<image:caption>Often the weakest point in a tree is where two stems attach, known as a union. This point may be ingrown or cracking and prone to fail under strain such as a heavy snow load or wind storm. Some trees can be supported through the installation of wire cables or rods to act as a brace. Cabling needs to be done by a trained professional as improperly installed cables can harm or weaken a tree; our ISA Certified Arborists can meet with you to help assess your trees for the suitability of cabling, and create a plan to install it properly.</image:caption>

A lot of the work we do involves a chipper; we also offer brush chipping as a stand-alone service. When you have a tree emergency you want a responsive, experienced, and safety-oriented crew to show up promptly to take care of it for you. That’s where we come in. For us, storm damage situations are like a high-stakes puzzle which need to be unraveled carefully and with the proper equipment, so as not to cause further damage. We also sell a limited supply of pre-cut green and air-dried lumber. We do not purchase logs from tree removal projects or pay stumpage for standing timber. Our mill handles boards or timbers up to 20 feet long and 23 inches wide. We charge by the hour for our milling services, please contact us for a quote!</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Woodsplitter Rental</image:title>
<image:caption>We offer our splitter as an affordable rental option to help you process your own firewood. When taking down trees on your property, we can often reduce cost and fossil fuel usage by leaving usable logs on site (cut to length) rather than truck them away. This is not your average home-depot splitter! Featuring 6-way and 4-way wedge options, hydraulic log lifter, tray, and 37-ton ram, this professional-grade machine will make short work of a pile of rounds. Rental pricing is by the week: $250 for the first week (including drop off and set up) and $150 per additional week.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Standing snags and trees with dead wood or a cavities in them are excellent habitat for many bird species and small mammals such as bats and flying squirrels. Unfortunately they can also pose a risk when in close proximity to ourselves and our homes, requiring us to remove this important habitat feature. By installing habitat boxes in healthy trees on your landscape we can help keep our wildlife around even when we need to remove a tree or dead branch to keep you safe. Habitat boxes are made in-house with our own native lumber. Custom sizes and designs can be made to match specific species needs. More information can be found at Mass Audubon</image:caption>

<image:caption>We sell cut and split firewood, with free local deliveries. Our wood is 16” in length, and a mix of hardwood species, most frequently ash, maple, oak, and birch. We deliver in a smaller 1-cord sized 4WD dump truck, which can access tight areas. We don’t do green vs seasoned pricing, rather our wood is the same price year round; it is split in the winter and spring, and sits in a pile in the sun until we sell out. We recommend buying early in the season so you can stack and cover it to be sure the wood is properly dried for the burning season. Pricing for the 2026 is as follows: 1/2 cord - $275, 1 cord - $375</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Our Team - Ezra Ward</image:title>
<image:caption>Co-Founder Ezra grew up in Montague MA, the son of a forester and a naturalist. He attended Green Mountain College in VT where he studied sustainable agriculture and outdoor leadership. He has worked as a carpenter, EMT, outdoor educator, and on a hotshot crew for the Alaska fire service. He started his tree work career working for The Whole Tree in Leverett, and became an ISA Certified Arborist in 2018. Later he became the crew leader for Carr Tree & Timber in Southern VT. Throughout his professional career he has always been troubled by the large amount of non-natural waste, and pollution produced by industry. Inspired to take action he bought his first sawmill in 2016 with the idea to help people make use of the wood from the trees he was taking down. In his spare time Ezra raises bees and chickens, tinkers on his tiny house, and performs as a clown! Ezra can be reached directly at ezra@woodsmithforestry.com.</image:caption>

While attending Amherst High School he was influenced by classes in wood technology and an outdoor program called “Survival Living” to choose a career path that involved caring for the trees, forests, and natural resources of New England. After pursuing a bachelors degree in ecological forest management from the University of Vermont he went on to work across Western MA as a Forestry Technician and then Staff Forester for Bay State Forestry Service where he became a MA Licensed Forester. Eric has also worked on trail crews in Vermont and Montana, as a sea kayak guide in the San Juan Islands of Washington state, a firefighter/first responder, and helped run the outdoor education program at ARHS for many years. More recently having turned his focus towards the running of Woodsmith Forestry and increasing his arboricultural skills, Eric became an ISA Certified Arborist in 2022. You can often find Eric in the office, driving a truck around, or out on a jobsite with a chainsaw in his hands (that’s where he’s happiest). Eric lives with his wife in Leverett where he spends his spare time scheming up canoeing adventures, riding his bike, eating waffles, and chasing his dog around in the woods. Eric can be reached directly at eric@woodsmithforestry.com.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Our Team - Eric “Palo” Depalo</image:title>
<image:caption>Climbing Arborist and Crew Leader Not to be confused with the other Eric D, “Palo”, as he’s known, is a scoundrel, a n'er-do-well, a Massachusetts native. When not climbing trees he is reviving a dilapidated farm in Greenfield, MA. He holds a BA in History from Yale, a MS in Ecological Design from the Conway school, Permaculture Design Certificates from here and there, and is an ISA Certified Arborist. He is a lover of photosynthesis, building soil, good poetry, bad puns, and saving humanity from near-certain calamity. Palo can be reached directly at depalo@woodsmithforestry.com.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Our Team - Andrew Row</image:title>
<image:caption>Tree Crew A background in nature-based education at Kroka Expeditions led Andrew to a career in the tree industry. Originally joining Woodsmith after meeting the crew at a tree climbing workshop, Andrew brings a wide range of tree-related experience to the job. In the past he has worked on small scale logging and sawmilling operations as well as running his own one-man tree service. Andrew has a special passion for operating the spider lift, pruning apple trees, climbing, and felling large pines! When he’s not working to improve his arboriculture skills, Andrew occupies himself by dreaming of wilderness adventures in the far north and spending time with his kids.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Our Team - Casey Howard</image:title>
<image:caption>Tree Crew Casey grew up in Washington DC, where her love of the woods and trees began. She has been a bicycle mechanic and a sailer, and studied Urban Forestry at UMass Amherst. She loves trucks, fireworks, whitefish melts, humidity, and her mom’s chicken paprikash. You’ll often find her running in the woods with her dog or blasting pop country radio in the truck. She wants to help create better working environments for everyone in the trades.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Our Team - Jonathan Kennedy</image:title>
<image:caption>Office Administrator Jonathan first moved to the valley in 1994 for university and received a BS in Natural Resources Studies with minors in Forestry and Resource Economics. After working at several positions, he settled into public education and taught Technology/Engineering in Springfield for a few years before moving further north to teach geosciences (Geology, Astronomy, Meteorology, Oceanography) as well as Chemistry and Irish Gaelic in Belchertown until 2023. In addition to his BS, he earned a MA in Education followed by a MA in Irish Gaelic. Jonathan is Woodsmith’s Office Administrator, answering the phone and email, and helping to smoothly operate the company’s administrative operations. When he’s not at Woodsmith, Jonathan enjoys playing traditional Irish music, hiking, learning to cook (he can now boil water!), and teaching Irish. He is based in Montague. You can reach Jonathan through our main phone line, 413 367 3161, or info@woodsmithforestry.com.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Our Team - Burdock</image:title>
<image:caption>HR/Paper Shredding Burdock is a transplant from Georgia, where he found himself in a shelter at 6 months old. Seeking a better life, he relocated to Western MA to take a position with Woodsmith Forestry. Once an active member of the crew, these days Burdock is more often found snoozing on his couch next to the woodstove or shredding important documents. Burdock lives with his family in Leverett, MA and spends his free time trying (unsuccessfully) to rid the world of squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks. An avid canoeist; he likes to head out on big trips with his family to places such as the Allagash, the Adirondacks, or the rivers of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Among his many claims to fame, he is featured on the front page of the Franklin County Outdoor Recreation Plan!</image:caption>
